Euvolution

“Those who have accepted evolution in the belief that it was not anti-Christian may well revise their conclusions…” —William Jennings Bryan, Menace of Darwinism.

“The influence primarily responsible for the modern eugenics movement was the establishment of the doctrine of organic evolution following the publication of Darwin’s Origin of Species in 1859.” —Samuel J. Holmes, Human Genetics, ch.25 (1936).

“Mistaken regard for what are believed to be divine laws and sentimental belief in the sanctity of human life tend to prevent both the elimination of defective infants and the sterilization of such adults as are themselves of no value to the community.” —Madison Grant, The Passing of the Great Race.

Darwinism-Eugenics-Evolution

The Darwin Medal

“A silver medal… given… in reward for work of acknowledged distinction in the broad area of biology in which Charles Darwin worked” — The Royal Society.

Leonard Darwin

Charles Darwin’s son. Eugenics Education Society. Eugenics Society, president 1911–1928, honorary president 1928–1943, life fellow, 1937. Cambridge Eugenics Society. On general committee (president), First International Eugenics Congress, 1912. Second International Eugenics Congress, 1921.

  • 1922 letter from Davenport to Leonard Darwin about Alfred Ploetz and German cooperation.
  • 1923 letter from the German Society of Race Hygiene to Leonard Darwin.

“As an agency making for progress, conscious selection must replace the blind forces of natural selection; and men must utilize all the knowledge acquired by studying the process of evolution in the past in order to promote moral and physical progress in the future. The nation which first takes this great work thoroughly in hand will surely not only win in all matters of international competition, but will be given a place of honour in the history of the world.”—Leonard Darwin, Presidential address, First International Eugenics Congress, 1912.

Florence Henrietta Darwin

Eugenics Society life fellow. Third wife of Leonard Darwin. Cousin of the writer Virgina Woolf, a eugenist. Woolf wrote in her diary:

“On the tow path we met and had to pass a long line of imbeciles…They should certainly be killed.”

Francis Darwin

Darwin Medalist 1912. Cambridge Eugenics Society. Vice president, First International Eugenics Congress.

Horace Darwin

Cambridge Eugenics Society. Charles Darwin’s son. Horace Darwin had three children: Erasmus, Emma Nora, and Ruth Frances.

Nora Darwin

Horace Darwin’s daughter. Editor of The Autobiography of Charles Darwin, Charles Darwin and the Voyage of the Beagle and Darwin and Henslow: Letters. Nora Darwin married one of Sir Thomas Barlow’s sons.

  • Sir Thomas Barlow: 1st International Eugenics Congress (1912.) Royal physician to King George V (like Lord Dawson, who murdered King George V.)
  • Sir Thomas Dalmahoy Barlow: Eugenics Society life fellow. Son of Sir Thomas Barlow.
  • Sir J.A.N Barlow: Eugenics Society member. Son of Sir Thomas Barlow. Married Nora Darwin.

Ruth Frances Darwin

Horace Darwin’s daughter. Secretary of the Cambridge Association for the Care of the Feeble Minded (let’s call it the CACFM.) It seems that women were not allowed to join the Cambridge Eugenics Society, so many notable Cambridge-affiliated ladies joined the CACFM instead. For example, Florence Keynes (John Maynard Keynes’s mother) and Catherine Whetham (wife of eugenist William Dampier Whetham). Ruth Francis Darwin married the famous eugenist William Rees-Thomas.

Ruth Darwin was on the Brock committee, which recommended sterilization of the eugenically unfit.

Ida Darwin

Wife of Horace Darwin. Cambridge Association for the Care of the Feeble Minded, chairman of the executive committee. In 1910 the (CACFM) and the Cambridge Eugenics Society cooperated to pressure the government to pass a bill for the compulsory segregation of the “feeble-minded.” The Ida Darwin Hospital was one result of this effort.

Letter from Ida Darwin to eugenist Karl Pearson, 1912. The letter concerns the Mental Deficiency Act. Many interesting names appear on the CACFM committee letterhead:

  • W. Bateson
  • Sir George Darwin
  • Horace Darwin
  • Hon. Mrs. Darwin
  • Miss R. F. Darwin
  • Mrs. Keynes
  • Professor Pigou
  • Professor Seward
  • W. C. D. Wetham
  • Mrs. W. C. D. Whetham
  • &c

George Howard Darwin

Charles Darwin’s son. Cambridge Eugenics Society. Cambridge Association for the Care of the Feeble Minded.

Maud de Puy Darwin

Eugenics Society fellow 1925, life fellow 1937. Central Committee for Mental Welfare. Wife of George Howard Darwin.

Charles Galton Darwin

Eugenics Society life fellow, vice-president 1939, director 1939, president 1953–1959, committee 1960. Grandson of Charles Darwin, son of George Howard Darwin. Chairman of Promising Families. Advisory editor (along with Josef Mengele’s mentor Von Verschuer) of the racist journal Mankind Quarterly. C. G. Darwin’s mother was a member of the Eugenics Society, as well as many of his aunts and uncles. Mankind Quarterly still exists. It’s now online. Here are some quotes from C.G. Darwin’s 1953 radio essay:

..the policy of paying most attention to the inferior types is the most inefficient way possible of achieving perfectibility of the human race… this preoccupation with the weaker members is part of the present menacing trend of political thought which insists on absolute equality.

[In] social democracy… the well-to-do are rather more likely than others to possess hereditary ability… but the more prosperous members of the community are not producing their share of the next generation… The whole thing is a catastrophe which it is now almost too late to prevent…

… I am entirely lacking in the thing which so many people seem to regard as their mainstay in life, a mystical sense of religion. This I lack, and I am perfectly content to be without it.

Francis Galton

Darwin Medalist 1902. Charles Darwin’s cousin. Coined the word eugenics in the early 1880s. Founded the Eugenics Education Society, which later became the Eugenics Society (the British one). Anti-Mendelian.

“I take Eugenics very seriously, feeling that its principles ought to become one of the dominant motives in a civilised nation, much as if they were one of its religious tenets.” — Galton, Memoirs

“[Eugenics] has indeed strong claims to become an orthodox religious tenet of the future, for Eugenics co-operates with the workings of nature by securing that humanity shall be represented by the fittest races… The first and main point is to secure the general intellectual acceptance of Eugenics… then let its principles work into the heart of the nation, which will gradually give practical effect to them in ways that we may not wholly forsee.” — Galton, Eugenics, its Definition, Scope, and Aims.

“It strikes me that the Jews are specialised for a parasitical existence upon other nations” — Galton to de Candolle, 1884 (Pearson’s Life and Letters of Galton, vol.2, pg 209).

Alfred Ploetz

Nazi. Ernst Rudin’s colleague. Munich Eugenic Society. Founded the German Society of Racial Hygene in 1905. President, International Society for Race Hygiene (1916). Vice-president, Eugenics Society (1915-?). Galton knew Ploetz personally. From Pearson’s Life and Letters of Galton, vol. 3, pg.429, we have some pleasant chit-chat…

July 4, 1910

My dear Karl Pearson, Thanks for both of your sendings, (1) the cutting from the Medical Times, which I return, (2) for the letter–how on earth it ever reached you is a mystery–from Eva Brigg’s servant (and more than servant), who is now married and settled in New Zealand. Yesterday I got together to tea, Miss Elderton, Crackanthorpe and Ploetz… Ever affectionately yours, Francis Galton.

Daniel Gasman, Scientific Origins of Nazism and Race Hygiene (1971):

“In 1904, Dr. Ploetz became one of the principal founders of the racially inspired eugenic journal, Archiv fur Rassen und Gesellschaftsbiologie. Among the editors were not only such future Nazi scientists as Eugen Fischer and Fritz Lenz, but also Ludwig Plate, a close colleague of Haeckel, a member of the Monist League, and the successor to Haeckel’s chair in zoology at the University of Jena. The first issue of the Archiv was dedicated to Haeckel and to August Weismann. In the articles of the journal, Haeckel’s name was constantly referred to; it is clear that the contributors regarded him as Germany’s major prophet of political biology, and one cannot avoid noticing the great weight which at all times was attached to his scientific authority, and to his ideas on politics and eugenics. The Archiv, which continued to be published right up through the Nazi period (until 1944), became one of the chief organs in Germany for the dissemination of eugenic ideas and provided a respectable scientific framework for Nazi writers…”

Apparently, by whatever unfathomable circumstances of history, Alfred Ploetz was nominated for the Nobel Prize in 1936.

Ernst Haeckel

Darwin Medalist 1900. Ph.D, M.D., LL.D., Sc.D., profesor at the University of Jena. Possibly the most ideologically influential Darwinian in history. Prophet of Monism. Founder of the Monistenbund in 1906; the Monist League. Physicist Ernst Mach was a member.

Haeckel coined the well-known terms phylum, phylogeny, ontogeny, gastrula, blastula, etc. along with some less well-known like plastidules, carbon-souls, psychomatic crystals, etc. The stuff on the right  is an example of his scientific work.

You know the story of how Richardson et al. blew the whistle on Haeckel’s fraudulent embryos in 1997. Which was, by the way, one fraud of many. With these 1997 revelations in hand, and seeing that evolutionary scientists were over 100 years slow in amending their reliance on Haeckel’s material, some public pressure finally led to the deletion of Haeckel drawings from new editions of Developmental Biology (Gilbert, 2000) and The Molecular Biology of the Cell (Alberts, 2002.)

See the wonderful self-correcting nature of Science, Billy-boy? That’s a great example of how science works! Well, maybe it’s a great example of how evolutionary science works.

Stephen J. Gould wrote this in 1977:

“Recapitulation was Haeckel’s favorite argument…He used it to attack nobility’s claim to special status – are we not all fish as embryos? – and to ridicule the soul’s immortality – for where could the soul be in our embryonic, wormlike condition?” –Gould,Darwin and After Darwin.

And evolutionists didn’t catch on until Richardson et al. came along in 1997. Many of them still seem to believe in recapitulation to this day. And of course many of them believe in Monism too; at least they talk as if they do. But really, what need was there to do painstaking embryological photography to prove that Haeckel was a fraud? Anyone with a little discernment (i.e., with a brain), upon reading some of Haeckel’s major works, would instantly conclude he was a lunatic, a crackpot scientist, and a danger to society. Go to the Haeckelology section of this website and read Haeckel’s books yourself. How long will it take you to figure out he isn’t for real?

There is no reason for science to pat itself on the back about exposing Haeckel in 1997, because Assmuth and Hull already published Haeckel’s Frauds and Forgeries back in 1915. That was some time ago. But not only that, Haeckel was known to be a fraud even before 1890 — before he was awarded the Darwin Medal. Even as far back as the 1870’s, Rudolph Virchow was warning people that Haeckel was a menace to society. And before that, Haeckel was tried at the University of Jena for academic misconduct. In 1876, 121 years before Richardson ‘exposed’ Haeckel, Haeckel wrote this in his preface to the third edition of Anthropogenie:

Many naturalists have especially blamed the diagrammatic figures given in the Anthropogeny. Certain technical embryologists have brought most severe accusations against me on this account, and have advised me to substitute a larger number of elaborated figures, as accurate as possible. I, however, consider that diagrams are much more instructive than such figures, especially in popular scientific works… exact figures, generally rather disturb and confuse than instruct and explain… If it is said that my diagrammatic figures are “inaccurate,” and a charge of “falsifying science” is brought against me, this is equally true of all the very numerous diagrams which are daily used in teaching. All diagrammatic figures are “inaccurate.”

Haeckel had a seething hatred of the Catholic Church and especially of the Jesuits. This sentiment erupts quite suddenly in odd places throughout his so-called scientific writings.

August Weismann

Darwin Medalist 1908. Weismann was a vice-president of the First International Eugenics Congress.  Ploetz dedicated the first issue of Archiv fur Rassen und Gesellschaftsbiologie to Weismann and Haeckel.

Thomas Henry Huxley

“Bathybius… is a vast sheet of living matter enveloping the whole earth beneath the seas.” –T. H. Huxley

Darwin Medalist 1894. Tireless anti-religious polemicist, Darwin’s “Bulldog”. Huxley expended massive effort attacking God, Christianity, the Catholic Church, and even the Salvation Army.

“In addition to the truth of the doctrine of evolution, indeed, one of its greatest merits in my eyes, is the fact that it occupies a position of complete and irreconcilable antagonism to that vigorous and consistent enemy of the highest intellectual, moral, and social life of mankind–the Catholic Church.”—T.H Huxley, Darwiniana.

Julian Huxley

Darwin Medalist 1956. Grandson of Thomas Henry Huxley. Eugenics Society member, fellow, council member, vice-president, president. Euthanasia Society executive committee. Abortion Law Reform Society vice-president. Author of Evolution: The Modern Synthesis (1942). Collaborated with J.S. Haldane and H.G. Wells on the popular 1920s evolution propaganda (“The Incontrovertible Fact of Evolution”) series Science of Life. Popularized the French works of Teilhard de Chardin (Piltdown Man, Peking Man.) Julian won the UNESCO Kalinga prize. Margaret Mead and Konrad Lorenz also won it. Not surprising, really, since Julian was the co-founder and first director-general (1946-1948) of UNESCO. I hope you weren’t thinking of donating money to UNESCO.

“For a justification of our moral code we no longer have to have recourse to theological revelation, or to a metaphysical Absolute; Freud in combination with Darwin suffice to give us our philosophic vision.” — Julian Huxley, Philosophy in a World at War.

Julian Huxley was a long-time friend of Nobel laureate Konrad Lorenz, who did race hygiene research for the Nazis. It is curious to note that Julian Huxley was a friend of Richard Dawkins’s grandfather, and Konrad Lorenz was a colleague of Dawkins’ Ph.D supervisor. Julian Huxley’s father, Leonard Huxley, was an executive officer of Rationalist Press Association, a publishing organization dedicated to the destruction of Christianity.

Karl Pearson

Darwin Medalist 1898. First Galton Professor of Eugenics 1911–1933, University College London. Head of Galton’s Eugenics Record Office 1906. Head of the Biometric laboratory. Marxist. Anti-Mendelian. Annals of Eugenics. Co-founded the journal Biometrika with Weldon and Charles Davenport as editors. After spending some time in Germany and discovering his roots, Carl Pearson changed his name to “Karl” Pearson.

“The garden of humanity is very full of weeds, nurture will never transform them into flowers; the eugenist calls upon the rulers of mankind to see that there shall be space in the garden, freed of weeds, for individuals and races of finer growth to develop with the full bloom possible to their species.” — Karl Pearson, Life and Letters of Francis Galton, vol.3.

Pearson wrote much on philosophy, and irrationalism was his personal philosophy of science. In conjunction with the raving atheist mathematician Clifford, Pearson produced a philosophical foundation of science for the rest of us to believe in. Irrationalism is much-favoured among charlatans in every sphere. After all, if you can get others to adopt irrationalism, they may stop making annoying requests for proof, evidence, and truth. Although almost no Darwinians today have ever seen Pearson’s or Clifford’s books, almost all are scientific irrationalists. You will recognize what I mean after pondering the following example.

“Of the so-called investigations of heredity pursued by extensions of Galton’s non-analytical method and promoted by Prof. Pearson and the English Biometrical School it is now scarcely necessary to speak… A preliminary acquaintance with the natural history of heredity and variation was sufficient to throw doubt on the foundation of these elaborate researches. To those who hereafter may study this episode in the history of biological science it will appear inexplicable that work so unsound should have been respectfully received by the scientific world… The only alternatives open to the inventors of those methods were either to abandon their delusions or to deny the truth of Mendelian facts. In choosing the latter course they have certainly succeeded in delaying recognition of the value of Mendelism…”

What is Pearson’s reply to this? Why, it is merely a straightforward profession of irrationalism, appearing on the same page:

“The author of Mendel’s Principles failed to realise that… all scientific knowledge is relative, there is no absolute truth in science…”

It isn’t necessary to quote more such displays because, dear Reader, you have heard it a thousand times from Darwinians; you know how the irrationalism head-trip goes.

Edward B. Poulton

Darwin Medalist 1914. Eugenics Society, member, council, vice-president, fellow 1937. First International Eugenics Congress 1912, general committee. Eugenics Education Society.

Reginald C. Punnett

Darwin Medalist 1922. Inventor of the Punnett square. First International Eugenic Congress general committee member. Cambridge delegate to the First International Eugenics Congress. Submitted the paper “Genetics and Eugenics” to the congress. Here’s an excerpt:

“The one instance of eugenlc importance that could be brought under immediate control is that of feeble-mindedness. Speaking generally, the available evidence suggests that it is a case of simple Mendelian inheritance. Occasional exceptions occur, but there is every reason to expect that a policy of strict segregation would rapidly bring about the elimination of this character.”

Albert Charles Seward

Darwin Medalist 1934. Eugenics Society member, vice-president. Cambridge Eugenics Society member, president. Cambridge Association for the Care of the Feeble Minded.

R. A. Fisher

Darwin Medalist 1948. Cambridge Eugenics Society, founder (1911), secretary. Eugenics Education Society member, Eugenics Society secretary, vice-president, director, fellow, life fellow. Galton Chair of Eugenics 1933–1943, University College London. Galton Lab. Third Balfour professor of genetics, Cambridge.

“Fisher… could be regarded as Darwin’s greatest twentieth-century successor.” — Richard Dawkins.

Fisher’s principal interest was eugenics. His text Genetical Theory of Natural Selection (1930) is said by darwinians to have been an pillar of the Modern Synthesis and an all-round fine work of science. You can download it from the resources section and read it yourself. If this is science, then what is pseudo-science?

One would be hard put to say what Fisher’s contributions to biology were, if any. Aside from his contributions to statistics, Fisher is remembered for a few other things, foremost being  the herculean effort he expended trying to prove that Gregor Mendel was a fraud.

J. B. S. Haldane

Darwin Medalist 1952. Eugenics Society member. Editor of the London Worker, a communist periodical. Haldane was instrumental in formulating the Modern Synthesis of darwinism. Darwinians have a marked habit of heaping superlative praise on themselves, and certainly Haldane recieved a lot of that. However, with the advent of scanned books and electronic archives, we can now read Haldane for ourselves and discover what a crackpot he was. Not only was he a Marxist, he was a True Believer, owned by Stalin. Haldane defended Trofim Lysenko in print, on the radio, and in public speeches.

Haldane’s view on euthanasia is interesting. He did not really like the idea of widespread murder of invalids and deformed children, or gassing old people. Not from any humanitarian or moral reason (he was after all a Marxist) but because it could be readily abused–it is all too easy for the wrong people to end up gassed. Instead, he believed that unproductive people who are useless to the State should simply kill themselves.

Haldane was an enthusiastic supporter of poison gas and chemical warfare. J. B. S. Haldane’s sister, Naomi Haldane-Mitchson was also a Eugenics Society member and life fellow. She was an honorary associate of Rationalist Press Association.

Walter Weldon

Eugenics Society. Editor of Biometrika. Anti-Mendelian.

Grafton Elliot Smith

Eugenics Society. Piltdown Man. Nebraska Man. Rhodesian Man. Peking Man.

Arthur Keith

Eugenics Society, council 1927, 1937. British Association for the Advancement of Science. Piltdown Man. Rhodesian Man.

“We now know that when the Piltdown type was being evolved in England — or at the Western end of the Old World — a totally different type had come into being in the Eastern lands of the Old World. The Eastern types had low receding foreheads, modelled as in the gorilla and chimpanzee. The Western or Piltdown type differed; it had a relatively upright and high forehead, modelled not on gorilla lines but rather on those of the orang. While the Eastern forms retained in their shape of head the low squat type of the chimpanzee and gorilla, the Western or Piltdown type tended to assume the higher vaulted skull seen in modern races. There is no denying that in many of his features Piltdown man foreshadowed some of the structural modifications we find in modern races of mankind.” — Arthur Keith, The Pildown Man Discovery, Nature, July, 1938.

Even as late as 1950, Keith insisted, in his autobiography, that Piltdown was the most important hominid, and authentic beyond question. Harry L. Shapiro, president of the American Eugenics Society, wrote a belated damage-control article in 1974 called “Piltdown and Peking”, where he said (and this is quite funny when you think about it):

“But it still puzzles me that Woodward and Keith did not recognize that the bones of Piltdown man were not petrified and true fossils. Both of them had had enough experience with genuine fossils to distinguish them from relatively recent unpetrified bone.”

Lord Dawson

Bertrand Edward Dawson. Eugenics Society, consultative council 1937. Physician to the Royal Family. In 1936 Dawson committed regicide by injecting King George V with a lethal dose of morphine and cocaine. Lambeth Conference. Margaret Sanger.

John Maynard Keynes

Treasurer, Cambridge Eugenics Society. Eugenics Society director 1937-1944, vice-president 1937. Governor of the World Bank. Darwinism and Eugenics meet Economics. A disciple of Malthus and Galton. Personal friend of Bertrand Russell. Keynes wrote The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money, and some stuff that appeared in Eugenics Review. His nephew William Milo Keynes was also a member of the Eugenics Society. William Milo Keynes was the son of Margaret Darwin, granddaughter of Charles Darwin.

t’s reasonable to assume that someone who joins the Eugenics Society thinks himself genetically superior, more biologically fit than the rest, and a valuable contributor to the nation’s germ-plasm. After all, could you imagine that someone would join the Eugenics Society if they didn’t believe that about themselves? Would someone who considers himself a hereditary reject and a biological error join the Eugenics Society and thereby give them a promising candidate for sterilization or euthanasia? But John Maynard Keynes was queer. He was gay. And he had no kids. Imagine that, a gay eugenist. How did he rationalize that?

John R. Baker

Cytologist, Oxford zoology department. Eugenics Society, fellow, 1931, 1937, 1957. Developed the Volpar contraceptive, tested on black women in the USA. Contributed to Julian Huxely’s Evolution: The Modern Synthesis (1944). Wrote Science and the Planned State (1946), Race: Foundation for Human Understanding (Oxford 1974), Julian Huxley, Scientist and World Citizen (1978). Baker wrote the biology section of the leftist encyclopedia An Outline for Boys and Girls (1932), some of which you can read here. Baker was a mendacious intellectual, even more direct with lies and distortions than, say, Julian Huxley. Read, for example, his 1932 radio lecture Missing Links.

Henry Fairfield Osborn

Darwin Medalist 1918. Sc.D Princeton. Hon. LL.D (Trinity, Princeton, Columbia.) Hon. D.Sc (Cambridge). Hon. Ph.D (Christiania.) Research Professor of Zoology, Columbia University. Vertebrate Paleontologist, US Geological Survey. Curator Emeritus of Vertebrate Paleontology in the American Museum of Natural History. Curator and president of the American Museum of Natural History (1890s-1930). Co-founder (along with Madison Grant) and president of the New York Zoological Society. Studied under T.H. Huxley.

With those credentials, how can anyone doubt that what springs forth from this fellow is but the purest waters of science?

Vice president, Eugenics Society, 1921, 1931. Co-founder, director, American Eugenics Society. Co-organizer and president of the 2nd International Eugenics Congress. President of the AAAS. [Possibly a member of the Galton Society.]

Osborn is most famous for being the man who gave us one of the finest icons of evolution, the horse-fossil series. To this very day, when some naive skeptic asks an obvious question like “where is the fossil evidence?” he is directed to Osborn’s horse-fossil series. Osborn was also involved in Nebraska Man and Piltdown. He examined Piltdown Man in 1921 and, in a really ridiculous account which I shall transcribe when I have time, pronounced it genuine. Osborn solved the problem of the paucity of evidence for human evolution with the help of McGregor, a fellow member of the American Eugenics Society. Seeing as they had very little in the way of evidence for their fairytales about ape-men, the two began to grind out ludicrous “artistic interpretations” of ape-men in the form of sculptures which could not possibly be based on anything real. This Osborn-McGregor scientific fraud has been gracing the pages of evolution books to this day. Osborn was one of the first, if not the first, to write a major-length “scientific work” (The Origin and Evolution of Life) on abiogenesis, which is to say, the evolution of atoms and molecules into slime and then people. His thesis, which had something to do with “adaptation of energy” or some such BS, drew upon the work of the monist Jacques Loeb. The result was a fine tome of monistic propaganda pretending to be science. It seems that Osborn had the malfortune to be involved in a lot of frauds, deceptions and so on.

Osborn wrote the prefaces to Madison Grant’s Passing of the Great Race, endorsing Grant’s views. This book is roughly the American equivalent of Mein Kampf.

His son Henry Fairfield Osborn Jr. was also a member of the American Eugenics Society. H. F. Osborn Sr. was Frederick Osborn’s uncle (see entry on Frederick Osborn.) The Osborn family lies at the foundation of American white-supremacy and neo-nazism.

Madison Grant

Member, Eugenics Society. Co-founder and director of the American Eugenics Society. President, Eugenics Research Association. Co-founder and fellow of the Galton Society. Treasurer, Second International Eugenics Congress. Treasurer, Third International Eugenics Congress. Member of the Immigration Restriction League. [Galton Publishing Company.]

Co-founder, (along with H. F. Osborn Sr.) secretary and chairman of the New York Zoological Society. Trustee of the American Museum of Natural History. Councillor, American Geographical Society. President of the London Zoological Society (Arthur Smith Woodward, of Piltdown Man fame, was vice-president.) President of the London Zoo and the Bronx Zoo.

Author of The Passing of the Great Race.

Lothrop Stoddard

American Eugenics Society member. American Eugenics Advisory Council member. Eugenics Research Association member. Pro-Hitler, pro-Nordic supremacy. On the staff of the Second International Eugenics Congress (1921). Author of Rising Tide of Color Against White World Supremacy and A Gallery of Jewish Types.

Frederick Osborn

Galton Society member, 1928, secretary 1931. Research associate, 1928, American Museum of Natural History. Co-founder of American Eugenics Society, president 1946–1952. Founding trustee of the Pioneer Fund, 1937. Princeton Curriculum Committee. Princeton Psychology Department Council. Member of the American Society of Human Genetics. Henry Fairfield Osborn’s cousin. With John D. Rockefeller III, Frederick Osborn co-founded the Population Council in 1953. Osborn was an outright racist who advocated that eugenists must conceal their true goals to evade the growing popular anti-eugenical sentiment.

After the War, the American public became disgusted with eugenics, for good reason of course, seeing what went on in Nazi Germany. But listen to Frederick Osborn talk about this. He should be apologizing, but he isn’t. Not only does he ignore the proven evils of eugenics, not only does he not admit its pseudo-scientific nature, he lays the blame on the public for being unwilling to accept that they are genetically inferior, and he advocates deceit as a strategy to continue pushing eugenics on unwilling citizens. Listen to the mind-boggling arrogance of this Darwinian eugenist. This is from Galton and Mid Century Eugenics by Frederick Osborn, Galton Lecture 1956, Eugenics Review, vol. 48:

“The very word eugenics is in disrepute in some quarters… We must ask ourselves, what have we done wrong? I think we have failed to take into account a trait which is almost universal and is very deep in human nature. People simply are not willing to accept the idea that the genetic base on which their character was formed is inferior and should not be repeated in the next generation. We have asked whole groups of people to accept this idea and we have asked individuals to accept it. They have constantly refused and we have all but killed the eugenic movement… they won’t accept the idea that they are in general second rate. We must rely on other motivation… it is surely possible to build a system of voluntary unconscious selection. But the reasons advanced must be generally acceptable reasons. Let’s stop telling anyone that they have a generally inferior genetic quality, for they will never agree. Let’s base our proposals on the desirability of having children born in homes where they will get affectionate and responsible care, and perhaps our proposals will be accepted.”

Again, in 1968, the attitude is the same:

“Eugenic goals are most likely to be attained under a name other than eugenics… Heredity clinics are the first eugenic proposals that have been adopted in a practical form and accepted by the public… The word eugenics is not associated with them… The most important eugenic policy at this time is to see that birth control is made equally available to all individuals in every class of society.” — Frederick Osborn, Future of Human Heredity, 1968.

Fredrick Osborn’s daughter Newell Brown, his wife Mrs. Frederick Osborn, his son Frederick Osborn jr., and his grandson John Jay Osborn were members of the American Eugenics Society.

Horatio Newman

American Eugenics Society member. Zoology professor at the University of Chicago. Scopes trial witness. Author of Readings in Evolution, Genetics, and Eugenics and Twins: A Study on Heredity and Environment (1937). [What is this creepy obsession eugenists have with twins?] Newman taught eugenics in his “evolutionary biology” class for more than 17 years and his scientific peers didn’t raise an eyebrow about it.

Vernon Kellogg

American Eugenics Society, consultative committee, advisory council, member. Trustee of the Rockefeller Institute. Related to Dr. John Harvey Kellogg (also a member of the AES) who invented cornflakes. It’s always amusing to see a Darwinian eugenist lambasting his critic as a science-denier…

Must all this overwhelming testimony that man is an evolutionary product be rehearsed again because Mr. Bryan says that it doesn’t exist; or that, if it exists, it need not be taken into account by the truly informed, who have in the book of Genesis a complete manual of world and human origin? — V. Kellog, The Modern View of Evolution, 1924.

David Starr Jordan

Eugenics Society vice-president. American Eugenics Society, chairman of the advisory committee, member. On the General committee of the First International Eugenics Congress. Trustee of the Carnegie Foundation. Member of the Eugenics Research Association. President of the AAAS. Professor of Zoology at the University of Indiana. President of the University of Indiana 1879-1885. President of Stanford University 1891-1913 (succeeded by Ray Lyman Wilbur, American Eugenics Society member.) President of the London Zoological Society (Madison Grant was also a president of this society.) President of the American Genetic Association. Director of the Boy Scouts of America.

Charles Davenport

Eugenics Society, vice-president 1931. American Eugenics Society. Second International Eugenics Congress, 1912. President at the 3rd International Eugenics Congress. Eugenics Records Office. Station for Experimental Evolution. President of the International Federation of Eugenical Organizations. Eugenical Research Association president. Co-founder and chairman the Galton Society. Tuskeegee experiments on humans.

“Vastly more effective than ten million dollars to charity would be ten millions to Eugenics. He who by such a gift should redeem mankind from vice, imbecility, and suffering would be the world’s wisest philanthropist.”

Ernst Rudin

Also spelled Ruedin. Evolutionary psychologist. Succeeded Charles Davenport as president of the International Federation of Eugenics Organizations. Principal architect of Nazi race hygiene policies. Brother-in-law of Alfred Ploetz.

“The importance of racial hygiene has only become known in Germany to all intelligent Germans through the political work of Adolf Hitler, and it was only through him that our more than thirty-year-old dream has become a reality and racial hygiene principles have been translated into action.”

“It is a tragic fate that Ploetz is no longer alive to witness the solution to the problem of understanding and co-operation among the Nordic peoples, he, who believed so unshakably in the resolute leadership of Adolf Hitler and in his holy mission of national and international racial hygiene”

Race hygiene was the German term for eugenics.

Eugen Fischer

Director: Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Anthropology, Human Heredity, and Eugenics (Berlin, 1927, financed by Rockefeller.) Hitler read Fischer’s book Principles of Human Heredity and Race Hygiene. See the eugenics resources to download Fischer’s Origin of the Hebrews.

Sewall Wright

Darwin Medalist 1980. 2nd International Eugenics Congress (1921), along with his wife. American Eugenics Society member, advisory council. Eugenics Research Association member. American Society for Human Genetics member. Member of the Biometric Society. President of the American Society of Naturalists (now a Darwinism-marketing organization.) Professor of Zoology at the University of Chicago (later professor at the University of Wisconsin.) Studied under Charles Davenport at Cold Spring Harbor. Also studied under another eugenist, W.E. Castle. Modern synthesis (“genetic drift.”)

James Crow

American Eugenics society member, director (1971–1974, 1979–1981.) President of the American Society of Human Genetics. Professor of Genetics at the University of Wisconsin. Darwin Medalist Motoo Kimura was one of Crow’s/Wright’s students.

[Artificial insemination could] produce in a single generation quite drastic changes in height, intelligence, or any other quantitative trait with a high heritability if it were widely applied… [does a parent] have an inalienable right to produce a child that is uneducable?… The right to reproduce at will is regarded as a basic human right. I cannot see this remaining true much longer… If eugenics is a dirty word we can find something else that means the same thing — Crow, Proceedings of Advances in Human Genetics and Their Impact on Society, 1972.

Cyril D. Darlington

Darwin Medalist. Eugenics Society, fellow 1952, 1957, 1977, vice-president, 1960. Honorary associate, Rationalist Press Association. The Evolution of Genetic Systems (1939). The Origins of Darwinism (Scientific American, 1959). Darwin’s Place in History (1959). The Evolution of Man and Society (1969).

…people have different contributions to make to society as individuals and breeders. As individuals the unskilled workers… are not much use to us … the old settled aristocracies and old unsettled gypsies of Europe were two more such useless groups. At the top and at the bottom of society waste materials accumulate. — C.D. Darlington, Race, Class, and Culture, 1970.

W. D. Hamilton

Darwin Medalist 1988. Eugenics Society member. Inventor of the idiotic “shared genes” inclusive fitness theory of altruism, among other things. [to do.]

On the one hand, the theory of inclusive fitness has many consequences, the falsity of which is so obvious that even a layman, (not to mention an intelligent child of nine), can see it. The falsity of these consequences is therefore, presumably, more obvious still to professional biologists. But on the other hand, the inclusive fitness theory is universally accepted by evolutionary biologists, and indeed is generally regarded by them as the greatest addition to their explanatory power that has been made since the 1930s and ’40s, when Darwinism merged with Mendelian genetics. In fact it is understating the case, to say that the theory is universally accepted. Inclusive fitness is by now a perfect article of faith with virtually all evolutionary biologists, and with all of the lay readers who take their beliefs about evolution from them. An objection made to the theory is never considered to prove anything except the incompetence of the objector… But laymen have other occupations, and the indignation they feel, when scientists stick like limpets to a theory they know is false, is not only natural but rational. A rational interest in science, as distinct from a professional one, is an interest in what is true, or probably true, or probably close to the truth: in that, and in nothing else. If a scientific theory is certainly not even near the truth, then, whatever attractions it may have for scientists, it is of no interest to a person who is simply trying to have rational beliefs and no others. That is how things actually stand, of course, with the theory (for example) that the blood is stationary, or that the earth is shaped like a bullet, or that it rotates from east to west. It is also how things actually stand with the theory of inclusive fitness. — David Stove, Darwinian Fairytales, pg. 158–159.

Harry H. Laughlin

Ph.D (Princeton). Pro-Nazi. American Eugenics Society co-founder, president 1927–29. Co-founder and first president (1937–1941) of the Pioneer Fund. Director, Eugenic Record Office (Cold Spring Harbor). Editor of Eugenical News. Eugenics Research Association. On the executive committee of the 2nd International Eugenics Congress.

  • 1914 Letter from vice-consul G[eza?] von Hoffmann to Laughlin:

“The far reaching proposal of sterilizing one tenth of the population impressed me very much.”

Harry Laughlin wrote a scientific analysis of Carrie Buck, concluding that Buck and her mother…

“…belong to the shiftless, ignorant and worthless class of anti-social whites of the South… the evidence points strongly toward the feeblemindedness and moral delinquency of Carrie Buck being due, primarily to inheritance” — Chase, The Legacy of Malthus.

You know the rest of the Carrie Buck story.

Edwin Grant Conklin

Professor of biology, Princeton. American Eugenics Society member [1925, 1928–31, officer, director? AES advisory council 1923–1926]. President, American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), 1936. Co-founder of the Galton Society. Author of Heredity and Environment in Development of Man (1925), Man, Real and Ideal (1943), and The Direction of Human Evolution (1921). The latter is available for download in the Resources section.

“The freedom of the individual man is to that of society as the freedom of the single cell is to that of the human being. It is this large freedom of society, rather than the freedom of the individual, which democracy offers to the world, free societies, free states, free nations rather than absolutely free individuals. In all organisms and in all social organizations, the freedom of the minor units must be limited in order that the larger unit may achieve a new and greater freedom, and in social evolution the freedom of individuals must be merged more and more into the larger freedom of society.”—Conklin, The Direction of Human Evolution.

Samuel J. Holmes

American Eugenics Society, president 1938–1940. Professor of zoology at the University of California. Member of the American Society of Human Genetics. Fellow of the AAAS.

“Hitler… bases his hopes of a national regeneration solidly on the application of biological principles to human society.”

T. N. Kelynack

Dr T. N. Kelynack, MD. Eugenics Society, Council 1910–1911, First International Eugenics Congress, 1912. Member of the Royal College of Physicians of London. Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine. Medical Advisor to the National Children’s Home and Orphanage. Member, Honorable Medical Consulting Staff, National Association for the Feeble-Minded. &c. Editor of Human Derelicts: Medico-Sociological Studies for Teachers of Religion and Social Workers, 1914.

Havelock Ellis

Eugenics Society. [To do]

Margaret Sanger

Eugenics Society life fellow. American Eugenics Society member.

“Before eugenicists and others who are laboring for racial betterment can succeed, they must first clear the way for birth control. Like the advocates for birth control, the eugenicists, for instance, are seeking to assist the race toward the elimination of the unfit.” — Sanger, Birth Control and Racial Betterment, 1919

“The first step would thus be to control the intake and output of morons, mental defectives, epileptics… The second step would be to take an inventory of the secondary group such as the illiterates, paupers, unemployables, criminals, prostitutes, dope fiends; classify them in special departments under government medical protection, and segregate them on farms…” –Sanger, Plan for Peace, Birth Control Review, April 1932.

Sanger was the girlfriend of Havelock Ellis (eugenist) and H. G. Wells (eugenist). The International Planned Parenthood Federation was founded by the Eugenics Society.

“Many prominent eugenicists, such as Ernst Rudin, close friend and advisor to Sanger and director of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Psychiatry in Munich, filled the pages of her various publications with their radical racist ideology. She worked closely with almost every leading eugenicist of her time, including Harry Laughlin and Lothrop Stoddard, writer of the fascist book The Rising Tide of Color Against White World Supremacy. Her close ties with these men, especially some Nazi eugenicists, indicated that she, like much of the mainstream eugenics movement, was supportive of the German eugenics programs — a fact that she and her publicists would later deny.” — P. Jalsevac, The Inherent Racism of Population Control, LifeSite, 2004.

Marie Stopes

Eugenics Society life fellow. Anti-Semite. Attended the Nazi International Congress for Population Science (1935.) Founder of the Society for Constructive Birth Control and Racial Progress. “Dr. von Verschuer has successfully bridged the gap between medical practice and theoretic scientific research.” (1936).

Eugenists in Britain and America knew about Verschuer’s background but did not expose him.

Ernst Mayr

Darwin Medalist 1984. American Eugenics Society member, director. Curator of the American Museum of Natural History (1944–1953.) Professor of Zoology at Harvard University. Mayr got his Ph.D at the University of Berlin in 1926. He founded the Society for the Study of Evolution. The SSE seems to be a Darwinism-marketing organization. Mayr was a vigorous opponent of God, Christianity and purpose in nature.

Theodosius Dobzhansky

The fruit-fly guy. American Eugenics Society director 1964-1973. Chairman of the board of directors 1969-1975. Marxist.
